I started carrying a purse in the fifth grade, but it wasn’t until I started driving that it became my constant accessory. Most of my friends will tell you (some of them to their great dismay) that I am incredibly practical when it comes to my purse choices. I prefer to buy my purses secondhand or from awesome places like ROSS or Value City. I would never buy a name brand purse just because it was a big brand – or even just because it’s “OMG, like so totally adorable!”

So many purses are just glorified shopping bags – black holes that eat everything you actually use and shove all the things you don’t need to the top. It’s amazing how difficult it can be to find your keys, flash drive, or debit card when all of them are hidden under a planner you bought never to use, tissues because your ex was allergic to air, medicine (just in case), and who knows what else you decided you should have on hand in case of an emergency.
And that doesn’t even mention those ridiculous straps that never want to stay on your shoulder, especially if you are on the phone or carrying groceries into your house (which let’s be real… the only time I’m NOT on the phone is when I’m carrying groceries into my house). The flimsy straps always seem to be the first thing to break on these stupid leather grocery bags full of needless necessities.
Ever since I came out to school, I have been carrying around my backpack. Seriously, that thing goes everywhere with me, well… everywhere except for the bathtub. It has so many compartments! It fits my laptop, multiple books, AND the entire contents of my purse (in an organized fashion). It has a pocket that was practically made for my chapstick and a special mesh netting to hold my water bottle.
Last night as I was laying in bed, I had a terrible realization. I will soon be going home and leaving my backpack-toting student habits behind (until I return five months later). The thought of switching back to a ridiculous purse was almost too much for me to handle.
So I’m not returning to my old ways. My backpack will be my new constant accessory… and next time that I decide I want an adorable purse (because even practical girls want to be cute)… I’m getting a black leather backpack instead.
